Indian Academy of Biomedical Sciences

The Indian Academy of Biomedical Sciences (Regd.) has been established with the vision, keen interest and efforts of several scientists from India and abroad. The Academy continues to grow and thrive in maintaining the main objective of promoting translational research covering different human diseases and their management. The Academy serves the purpose of disseminating knowledge and promoting academic excellence in the field of Biomedical Sciences. Till date, seven Annual Conferences, as well as numerous Mini Symposia, have been organized at different places under the banner of IABS.

The Academy has instituted following prestigious awards, for promoting academic excellence:
  1. Padma Shri Prof. Mahdi Hasan Award for clinical research
  2. Prof. Sohail Ahmad Award for basic research
  3. Smt. Kusum Sharma Award for Young Woman Scientist
  4. Prof. Nurul Islam Award for Best Oral Presentation by a Young Scientist
  5. Shri. Om Prakash Sharma Award for Young Scientist
  6. Mrs. Farha Deeba Haq Award for Young Scientist for Cancer Research
  7. Mrs. Abida Mahdi Award for Neuroscience Research.
  8. Dr. K.K. Srivastava Prof. L.M. Srivastava Young Innovator Award
  9. Life Time Achievement Award

Padma Shri Prof. Mahdi Hasan Award for an eminent Scientist who has made outstanding contributions in Biomedical Sciences especially in Clinical Research.

The Award has been instituted out of an endowment made by Prof. Abbas Ali Mahdi, to commemorate the memory of his father late Professor Mahdi Hasan, an Eminent Medical Teacher & Scientist and Founder Patron of the Academy (Former Principal/Dean/Director, J.N. Medical College, AMU, Aligarh).

Recipient of 2014: Prof. Lalit Kumar (AIIMS, New Delhi) Recipient of 2015:  Dr. Naresh Trehan (Medanta – Gurgaon) Recipient of 2016: Prof. Raj Kumar (SGPGI, Lucknow) Recipient of 2016: Prof. R.K. Garg (KGMU, Lucknow)

Prof. Sohail Ahmad Award for an eminent Scientist who has made outstanding contributions in Biomedical Sciences especially in Basic Research.

The Award has been instituted out of an endowment made by Prof. Shad Bano Ahmad, to commemorate the memory of her husband late Professor Sohail Ahmad, an Eminent Medical Scientist (Former Professor & Chairman, Department of Microbiology, J.N. Medical College, AMU, Aligarh).

Recipient of 2014:  Prof. D.N. Rao (AIIMS, New Delhi) Recipient of 2015: Prof. S.M. Hadi (AMU. Aligarh)
Recipient of 2016:  Prof. Rajendra Prasad (PGI, Chandigarh) Recipient of 2017:  Dr. S. Swarnkar (CSIR – IICB, Kolkata)

Life Time Achievement award for an eminent Scientist who has made outstanding contributions in Biomedical Sciences.

The Award has been instituted out of an endowment made by Prof. Thuppil Venkatesh (ex-Professor & Head, Department of Biochemistry, St. John’s Medical College, Bangalore).

Smt. Kusum Sharma Award for a Young Woman Scientist who has made outstanding contributions in Biomedical Research (age: below 40 years, as on 1st January of the year of conference).

The Award has been instituted out of an endowment made by Dr. Belu Sharma to commemorate the memory of her mother late Smt. Kusum Sharma, a thorough gentle and affectionate lady.

Prof. Nurul Islam Award for best paper presentation made at the Annual Meeting of the Academy by a young scientist (age: below 40 years, as on 1st January of the year of conference).

The Award has been instituted out of an endowment made by Prof. Najmul Islam to commemorate the memory of his father late Prof. Nurul Islam (Former Dean, Faculty of Science, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh).

Recipient of 2014:  Dr. Santosh Kumar (SIMS, Thiruvananthapuram) Recipient of 2015 : Dr. Asim Rizvi (AMU, Aligarh) Recipient of 2016:  Dr. Mohd. Kaleem Ahmad (KGMU, Lucknow) Recipient of 2017 :  Dr. Nisar-ul-Ashraf (KU, Srinagar)

Shri. Om Prakash Sharma Award for a Young Scientist who has made outstanding contributions in Biomedical Research (age: below 45 years, as on 1st January of the year of conference).

The Award has been instituted out of an endowment made by Prof. Alpana Sharma to commemorate the memory of her father late Shri Om Prakash Sharma.

Recipient of 2015 :   Dr. S.K. Saxena (CCMB, Hyderabad)  Recipient of 2016 :  Dr. R. Chaturvedi (IITR, Lucknow) Recipient of 2017 :  Dr. Amit Misra (IIT, Jodhpur)

Mrs. Farha Deeba Haq Award for a Young Scientist who has made outstanding contributions in the field of Cancer Research (age: below 45 years, as on 1st January of the year of conference).

The Award has been instituted out of an endowment made by Dr. Afrozul Haq to commemorate the memory of his wife late Mrs. Farah Deeba.

Recipient of 2015 : Dr. Suaib Luqman (CIMAP, Lucknow) Recipient of 2016:  Dr. Mehdi H. Shahi (AMU, Aligarh) Recipient of 2017 :  Dr. Hifzur R. Siddiqui (AMU, Aligarh)

Mrs. Abida Mahdi Award for a Scientist who has made outstanding contributions in the field of Neuroscience Research.

The Award has been instituted out of an endowment made by Prof. Farzana Mahdi to commemorate the memory of her mother-in-law late Mrs. Abida Mahdi.

Recipient of 2015 :  Prof. Rakesh Shukla (KGMU, Lucknow) Recipient of 2016:  Dr. Sandeep Tripathi (NIMS, Jaipur)

Recipient of 2017 :  Dr. Kunzang Chosdol (AIIMS, New Delhi)

Dr. K.K. Srivastava – Prof. L.M. Srivastava Young Innovator Award
The Award has been instituted out of an endowment made by Prof. K.K. Srivastava & Prof. L.M. Srivastava.

Recipient of 2015 :   Ms. Babita Singh (KGMU, Lucknow) Recipient of 2016: Ms. Kalluri Thishya (NIMS, Hyderabad) Recipient of 2017 :  First: Dr. Altaf Najar (Mangalore), Second: Mr. Asim Badar (JNMC, AMU, Aligarh), Third:  Ms. Sumarti Gurtoo (Mangalore)

How to apply? :         Candidates who wish to apply shall send nominations through Fellows/Members of the Academy/Vice Chancellors/Directors/Deans/Principals of the Academic Institutions/Universities and other eminent Scientists.

  • Padma Shri Prof. Mahdi Hasan Award and  Sohail Ahmad Award carry Rs. 10,000.00 (Ten thousand) in cash, a medal and a certificate. While other awards (barring Prof. Nurul Islam Award, Dr. K.K. Srivastava – Prof. L.M. Srivastava Young InnovatorAward and Life Time Achievement award) carry Rs. 5,000.00 (Five thousand) in cash, medal and certificate.

 

Nomination: The nominations on plain paper shall specify (a) Full name, age and address of the nominee (including email ID, Phone and Mobile number); (b) Academic and professional qualifications and positions held; (c) A brief statement (of about 200-250 words) of the outstanding contributions of the nominee, highlighting the impact of the work; and (d) A list of titles of the most significant published works (not more than 10). Moreover, consent of the nominee, a copy of complete CV and two passport size photographs shall also be sent along with the nomination, at the address given below.

(Please note that for Smt. Kusum Sharma Award, Shri Om Prakash Sharma Award Mrs. Farha Deeba Haq Award attested copy of the birth certificate of the nominee shall also be submitted along with the nomination papers).

The last date for submission of nominations is 30th September.

Announcement: The name(s) of recipient(s) shall be announced by the end of November.

Award Presentation: The Awards shall be presented at the Inaugural Function of Annual Meeting of the Academy. The recipient of the award shall have to present his or her work at a special session during the conference. If any recipient of the Award fails to turn up to present his/her work, without any valid reason to the satisfaction of the awards committee members, then the award shall stand withdrawn and no award will be given for that year.

KINDLY NOTE:

For Prof. Nurul Islam Award the candidates shall apply to the Organizing Secretary of the Annual Conference, along with an abstract of their presentation and one page biodata. The candidates will have to present their work in the form of a power point presentation in front of a jury and the award will be presented at the Valedictory function of the Annual Conference. The award carries a certificate and a medal.

For Dr. K.K. Srivastava – Prof. L.M. Srivastava Young Innovator Awards the candidates shall apply to the Organizing Secretary of the Annual Conference along with short one page biodata and an abstract of their presentation. They will have to present their work in the form of a poster at the Annual Conference. The posters will be judged by a special jury and award(s) will be presented at the Valedictory function of the Conference. There are three awards, namely Gold, Silver and Bronze and each award carry a certificate and a medal.
